Jim Felton
Finance professor
How he gets students involved: Felton involves his students in the Barron's stock-picking competition every year. His students also manage a real portfolio of stocks with money from the Celani Fund, which consists of money raised through the auction of motorcycles donated by CMU alumnus Tom Celani. Proceeds go toward student scholarships.
Why it matters: Felton's business students are taking what they're learning in their textbooks and applying it to real-life scenarios.
Why CMU: "Business students at CMU get a really well-rounded education, and they're much better prepared than a lot of other schools. The class sizes are smaller, and the faculty members are regular full-time faculty members - not a lot of graduate students."
CMU is the only school in the U.S. with a student and a professor in the Barron's stock-picking contest top 10.
