Maureen MacGillivray
Apparel merchandising and design professor
Her research: MacGillivray and a team of CMU researchers use cutting-edge technology like CMU's body scanner, thermal camera and environmental chamber to design functional apparel.
What it means for students: Students get involved with apparel design research working with CMU's industry partners on real-life projects while they're in school, often translating into job offers for students before they graduate - CMU's apparel design program has a 98 percent placement rate.
Why CMU: "CMU has been great in terms of supporting faculty in getting resources for the program. It's important because we integrate technology into the undergraduate curriculum so our students have the opportunity to work with equipment that's really at the forefront of the industry."
CMU is the only university to partner with the NFL, NHL and NBA for research into thermal imaging and body scanning for new uniform designs.
