Patty Janes
Recreation, parks and leisure services administration professor
Her work: Janes and a group of CMU students traveled to Mississippi with Tourism Cares to clean up sites damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Their work helped stimulate tourism and revive the region's economy.
Why it matters: Like many CMU professors, Janes incorporates service learning into her curriculum to provide hands-on experiences that not only help students learn but also give something back to the field in which they are learning.
Why CMU: "I find not only our learning environment to be exceptional, but also our living environment. CMU is a tight, close-knit community in a rural location that provides students with a safe place away from home. Even though we're a large school with a diverse array of offerings for students, we work in a very team-oriented environment."
CMU received a Katrina Compassion Award in 2006 - one of only nine given to U.S. universities.
